Japan Earthquake Leaves 23 Injured, No Tsunami Reported

23 Injured After 5.9-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Eastern Japan

Tokyo: At least 23 people were injured in an earthquake that struck eastern Japan today, with most injuries reported to be minor.

The 5.9-magnitude earthquake occurred in the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of approximately 68 kilometres, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, as reported by Kyodo News.

The injured were reported across four prefectures: Saitama, Kanagawa, Chiba and Ibaraki.

The earthquake caused delays to several train services operating in the Tokyo area, including services connecting to Narita Airport, as well as local train lines.

Power was also temporarily disrupted for around 460 homes in Tokyo, although electricity was subsequently restored.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said she had instructed officials to assess the extent of the damage and provide timely information to the public.

Authorities reported no abnormalities at nuclear power plants or facilities handling nuclear materials in the affected areas.

The earthquake was initially estimated at magnitude 5.8 by Germany’s GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, which placed the event off the eastern coast of Honshu Island. The Japan Meteorological Agency later revised the magnitude to 5.9 and identified southern Ibaraki Prefecture as the epicentral area.
