Japan’s Nikkei Falls for Third Straight Session on Geopolitical Tensions
Tokyo: Japan’s stock market declined for the third consecutive session today, as escalating geopolitical tensions over Greenland prompted investors to seek refuge in the Japanese yen, while weaker-than-expected economic data also weighed on market sentiment.
The Nikkei 225 index fell 0.6 percent to close at 53,583.57 points, while the broader Topix index edged down 0.1 percent to 3,656.40 points.
Market breadth was negative, with 133 stocks declining against 89 gainers on the Nikkei index.
Sumitomo Pharma recorded the steepest decline, plunging 13 percent, followed by Toyota Tsusho, which fell 4.1 percent. In contrast, Aeon, the retail group, led gains with a rise of 6.7 percent, while Ajinomoto, a food additives producer, advanced 6.1 percent.
Analysts noted that heightened global uncertainty and risk aversion continued to influence trading behavior, pushing investors toward safe-haven assets and pressuring equity markets.
