Japan’s busiest railway station is testing mobile robotic trash bins to help reduce the workload of sanitation workers and improve waste collection, rail operator JR East said on Friday.
The trial at Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station, which serves more than 2.7 million passengers daily, involves three autonomous bins that move slowly through the station’s underground concourse, collecting rubbish before delivering it to staff.
The robots, which operate at about 20 centimeters per second, are being tested until late November to assess whether they can safely navigate crowded platforms and encourage commuters to dispose of their waste.
JR East said the project will also examine public acceptance of the technology, with officials considering broader uses if the trial proves successful. The robots have already attracted attention from tourists, many of whom have stopped to photograph the eye-shaped devices.
