Japan’s Nikkei Ends Higher as Gaming and Pharmaceutical Shares Rally
Tokyo: Japan’s Nikkei share average rose today as investors bought gaming and pharmaceutical stocks that had previously declined sharply, while lower crude oil prices and the US Federal Reserve’s largely anticipated monetary policy decision supported market sentiment.
The Nikkei index closed 0.3% higher at 64,136.25, while the broader Topix index gained 0.8% to 4,094.19.
Chip-related heavyweights weighed on the Nikkei, with Advantest falling 1.5% and Tokyo Electron declining 1.4%.
Some artificial intelligence-related shares moved higher, with SoftBank Group gaining 1% and cable maker Fujikura rising 0.6%.
Investors also turned towards gaming and pharmaceutical stocks, which had lagged the broader market. Nintendo shares rose 4.3%, while Bandai Namco gained 3.4%.
Sumitomo Pharma climbed 5.3%, recording the largest percentage gain on the Nikkei.
Shares of oil-related companies declined as crude prices fell, with Inpex dropping 3.2%.
