Injury Crisis Pushes Liverpool Toward Geertruida Talks
Liverpool: Liverpool FC have opened discussions regarding a potential loan move for Dutch international defender Lutsharel Geertruida, currently on loan at Sunderland, as manager Arne Slot looks to reinforce his defensive options ahead of the decisive phase of the season.
The 25-year-old defender, who previously worked under Slot at Feyenoord before joining RB Leipzig, is regarded as a key target due to his tactical versatility. Geertruida is capable of operating at right-back, centre-back, and in defensive midfield, offering solutions to several areas affected by injuries within the Liverpool squad.
Liverpool’s interest comes amid a mounting defensive injury crisis. Conor Bradley has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury, Jeremie Frimpong is sidelined for several weeks due to a groin problem, while uncertainty surrounds the future of Ibrahima Konaté, whose contract expires this summer.
Negotiations, however, are expected to be complex, involving three parties: Liverpool, Sunderland—where Geertruida is currently on a season-long loan—and parent club RB Leipzig. Reports indicate that the player’s loan agreement does not include a recall clause, meaning any potential move would require the full consent of Sunderland and their manager Régis Le Bris.
The talks underline Liverpool’s urgency to secure defensive reinforcement as the club prepares for a demanding run-in across domestic and continental competitions.
