Mexico Confirms Three Human Screwworm Cases in Sinaloa
Mexico City: Health authorities in Mexico’s Sinaloa State have confirmed three human cases of screwworm infestation in different areas of the state, alongside 109 confirmed cases among livestock and other animals.
Public health and veterinary authorities are continuing monitoring and control operations under a One Health approach to limit the spread of the parasite, particularly in rural areas.
Daniel Fabian Sosa Tapia, Coordinator of the Sinaloa Commission for the Prevention of Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Exotic Animal Diseases, said the human cases were detected in the municipalities of Ahome, Villa Union and El Rosario.
He noted that the affected individuals are receiving medical care, while health authorities continue surveillance and monitoring in the areas concerned.
Screwworm, also known as the New World screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax), is the larval stage of a fly that lays its eggs in or near open wounds. After hatching, the larvae feed on living tissue, potentially causing severe damage if the infestation is not detected and treated promptly.
The parasite primarily affects animals but can also infest humans through open wounds. The risk of complications increases when the infestation remains undetected for an extended period.
The human cases were reported amid continued efforts to control the parasite among livestock in Sinaloa. The state has recorded 109 positive cases in animals, with some cases remaining active and undergoing treatment and observation.
