‘Muscat, the Essence of Inspiration’ wins first place in “Muscat Inspires Us” short film competition

Muscat: The film “Muscat, the Jewel of Inspiration” by director Sarah bint Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Balushi won first place in the “Muscat Inspires Us” Short Film Competition, while the film “Eye of the Sky” by director Ruqayya bint Abdullah bin Ibrahim Al Zaabi came in second place, and the film “The Omani Jewel, Muscat” by director Al Mohand bin Hilal bin Sulaiman Al Sariri won third place.

This came at the closing ceremony of the competition, which was organised today by Muscat Governorate under the patronage of His Excellency Sayyid Saud bin Hilal Al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat. The film “Amira Over Time” by Mahmoud bin Hamdan bin Suleiman Al Fazari won fourth place, while the film “Discover Muscat” by Nasser bin Abdullah bin Nasser Al Hashemi won fifth place, and sixth place went to the film “I am Muscat” by Al Mohand bin Mohammed Al Riyami

. The film “Doors of Muscat” by Mohammed bin Hilal Al Ghafri achieved seventh place, while the film “Civilization of the Past and Vision of the Future” by Saud bin Mohammed Al Faliti achieved eighth place.

Sarah bint Abdullah Al Balushi, director of the first-place winning film, “Muscat, the Essence of Inspiration,” told Oman News Agency: “We drew inspiration for this film from the competition’s title, ‘Muscat Inspires Us.’ The film focused on inspiration and how Muscat, with its sea, mountains, and modern and ancient markets, was able to inspire the people living on its land.

Through this visual documentation, our goal is to convey inspiration to the world, inviting tourists, whatever their purpose, to visit this city, which is a haven for all people, photographers, musicians, and painters. The basis of the film is to explain how Muscat, with its buildings, streets, landmarks, and nature, is a source of inspiration for all of them.”

Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Ajmi, Chairman of the Omani Cinema Society and a member of the jury, said: “The jury received 34 distinguished short films that presented a bright image of Muscat as a global tourist destination that combines authenticity and modernity. Accordingly, the evaluation process was based on a number of criteria, namely creativity and artistic quality, including photography, directing, and editing, as well as clarity of the promotional message in terms of the film’s compatibility with the competition’s slogan, in addition to the criteria of emotional impact and visual appeal; in terms of the film’s ability to inspire the audience and encourage tourism.”

He added: “The committee faced a great challenge in selecting the winning works, given the quality of the films submitted, as each entry was distinguished by its own style and creative narrative. Therefore, the jury expresses its pride and appreciation for the participating talents who presented works that reflect the spirit of innovation and dedication.”

The committee concluded in its statement the necessity of developing ideas and searching for what is new and unfamiliar to the viewer’s mind; with the aim of increasing his interest in the film. It also recommended expanding the geographical coverage of Muscat Governorate by making promotional films that express the people and the place, and include all the states by covering the various regions in Muscat Governorate, from the beaches to the mountains, and from the traditional markets to the modern landmarks, while showing the lively side and life in the capital Muscat and the beauty of Muscat in the evening.

The committee made its recommendations on the importance of truly going into the depth of the subject, and not remaining on the surface of the idea, by asking the right questions and an image that reflects the essence of the film, with the possibility of considering adopting an initiative to create a sub-competition “Muscat in the Eyes of Visitors.” The ceremony included a visual presentation of selected clips from the participating films, which demonstrated diversity of ideas and artistic creativity.

It is noteworthy that the competition included various topics including tourism, community partnership, sustainable development, history and culture, architectural identity, and sustainable education. The films were evaluated by a specialized jury that included experts from the Omani Cinema Society, the Ministry of Information, and the Governorate of Muscat.
