NASA researchers have identified a newly formed lunar crater named McGetchin, measuring 222 meters (730 feet) wide, making it the largest new crater ever discovered in the solar system. Scientists believe it was created in spring 2024 when an asteroid or comet, roughly the size of a three- to six-story building, struck the Moon.
The impact is considered extremely rare, with events of this scale occurring only about once a century or longer. The crater was spotted by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter in a recent scan and is expected to help scientists better understand the Moon’s geology and support future lunar missions.
