Oman Continues Strong Performance at Gulf Games in Qatar

Doha:  The Sultanate of Oman continued its strong performance at the 4th Gulf Games currently taking place in Doha, State of Qatar, after raising its medal tally to 14 medals of various colours.

The national athletics team won four medals, including three gold medals and one silver medal.

Mazoon bint Khalfan Al-Alawi secured the first gold medal in the women’s long jump event, while Fatik bin Abdul Ghafour Beit Jaaboub won the gold medal in the high jump competition.

In the 100-metre race, runner Ali bin Anwar Al-Balushi claimed the gold medal, while teammate Mulham bin Darwish Al-Balushi won the silver medal.

In the fencing competitions, player Israa bint Saif Al-Siyabi won her second gold medal of the tournament after claiming first place in the foil event.

Players Ahmed bin Anwar Kaskas and Al-Harith bin Salem Al-Harthi also added two bronze medals in the épée competition.

The national athletics team is scheduled to participate in several events tomorrow as part of efforts to increase Oman’s medal tally and continue competing for leading positions in the athletics standings.

In shooting competitions, Oman’s national team is participating in the 10-metre mixed air rifle event, while the national snooker team continues its participation in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Oman’s national volleyball team will begin its campaign tomorrow against Bahrain at Aspire Hall at 5 pm Muscat time. The second match will bring together the UAE and Qatar teams at 7:30 pm.

The volleyball team enters the tournament following an intensive preparation programme that included training camps and technical preparations under Tunisian coach Nizar Al-Shakili, who took charge of the team earlier this year.

Runner Ali bin Anwar Al-Balushi expressed his happiness after winning the gold medal in the 100-metre race, describing the achievement as a strong motivation for future competitions.

He said that the race witnessed strong competition and dedicated the medal to the Sultanate of Oman and Omani supporters.

For his part, Fatik bin Abdul Ghafour Beit Jaaboub said that winning the high jump gold medal was a significant achievement given the level of competition.

He added that competing alongside Olympic champion Mutaz Barshim provided additional motivation and expressed hope that the achievement would support his preparations for future participation in the Asian Games in Japan.
