Athletics Grand Prix Competitions Kick Off in Muscat

Muscat: The first edition of the Athletics Grand Prix, organized by the Oman Athletics Federation, kicked off today at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher, with the participation of male and female athletes from more than 50 countries competing in 31 events.

The competitions are part of the World Athletics Continental Tour at the Bronze level, alongside the International Challenge Tour. The events provide athletes with ranking points and opportunities to qualify for major international championships.

Oman’s national athletics team delivered strong performances, securing several top positions across the competitions.

In the men’s events, Egypt’s Mostafa El-Gamel won the hammer throw, followed by Qatar’s Ashraf El-Shafei and Japan’s Tatsuo Nakajawa.

Egypt’s Youssef Bekkat claimed the shot put title, with Qatar’s Djebrin Ahmet second and his compatriot Hamza Sos third.

Ethiopia’s Bola Melaku won the long jump, ahead of South Africa’s Lufu Manyango and Malaysia’s Ander Anwar.

Oman’s Fatih Jaaboub secured first place in the high jump, followed by Egypt’s Abdelrahman Saber and the United States’ Isaiah Holmes.

Oman’s Salem Al-Rawahi won the triple jump, while Saudi Arabia’s Issa Jarrah finished second and his compatriot Ahmed Tharwat third.

The UAE’s Sulaiman Abdulrahman won the 400 metres, followed by Morocco’s Houssam Hattab and Japan’s Fuga Sato.

Puerto Rico’s Ryan Sanchez claimed first place in the 800 metres, ahead of France’s Youssef Benzema and Türkiye’s Salah Tseköz.

Oman’s Ali Al-Balushi won the 100 metres, with American Braunoud Schicklin second and Oman’s Mulham Al-Balushi third.

Schicklin went on to win the 200 metres, followed by South Africa’s Tsebo Matos and Japan’s Ryūt Yagūmata.

Ethiopia’s Gundan Abo won the 300 metres, with compatriot Issa Abo second and fellow Ethiopian Bekele Katse third.

Türkiye’s Salah Teskuz secured first place in the 1,500 metres, followed by Somalia’s Abdikdar Suleiman and Ethiopia’s Shele Etshech.

South Africa’s Mondria Barander won the 110-metre hurdles, ahead of the Netherlands’ Lama Scheff and Kuwait’s Yaqoub Al-Youha.

Malaysia won the men’s 4×100-metre relay, while Oman finished second.

In the women’s events, UAE athlete Fatima Al Hosani won the discus throw, while her compatriot Salma Al Marri finished second.

Canada’s Jalina Weir claimed the women’s hammer throw, followed by UAE’s Salma Al Marri and Dima Al Marri.

Nigeria’s Fada Kapseng won the long jump, with the Netherlands’ Bente Stol second and Türkiye’s Yasemin Burak third.

UAE athlete Alia Al Mughairi secured first place in the high jump, followed by Iraq’s Maryam Abdullah and Iran’s Asel Gholmal.

In the under-18 girls’ 80 metres, Argentina’s Magdalena Ord won first place, followed by Egypt’s Yara El-Sarj and the UAE’s Alia Saeed.

The UAE’s Mariam Karim won the women’s 400 metres, with compatriot Amniyat Kamardin second and Bahrain’s Safna Abdulghani third.

Kenya’s Paulina Naus claimed first place in the 800 metres, ahead of compatriot Nellie Gap and Ethiopia’s Dorasto Gobene.

In the women’s 100 metres, the Dominican Republic’s Larina Alonos won, followed by Singapore’s Veronica Birmer and Qatar’s Dana Salem.

Birmer later won the 200 metres, with Alonos second and UAE athlete Amniyat Kamardin third.

Malaysia won the women’s 100-metre relay, followed by Kuwait in second and Abu Dhabi Club in third.
