Through the specialized field of insect macro photography, Omani photographer Ghaniya Al Majrafi reveals details that are often invisible to the naked eye, presenting a miniature world rich in color, structure and behavior. Her work highlights the diversity of Oman’s natural environment and sheds light on its lesser-seen ecosystems.
In an interview with the Oman News Agency (ONA), Al Majrafi said that her journey in photography began in 2017, during which she has documented a wide range of insect species across Oman, some of which were captured for the first time through her lens.
She explained that insect photography carries artistic, scientific and environmental value. Artistically, it highlights composition, color and fine details. Scientifically, it supports the documentation of species and behaviors useful for researchers and specialists. Environmentally, it helps raise awareness about the role insects play in pollination and natural decomposition, which are essential for ecological balance.
Al Majrafi noted that Oman’s varied geography and climate contribute to a rich diversity of insect life. Documenting these species provides researchers and enthusiasts with detailed visual references that support environmental and classification studies, while also drawing attention to an often overlooked aspect of biodiversity.
She also pointed to the role of modern technology in advancing macro photography, including specialized lenses and focus stacking techniques that allow for highly detailed imagery. Social media platforms have further helped expand the reach of such work to wider audiences.
Speaking about the challenges of this field, Al Majrafi said that photographing insects requires patience and precision due to their small size and constant movement. Environmental factors such as wind and heat, as well as the difficulty of accessing insects in dense or confined spaces, add to the complexity of the work.
She stressed the importance of ethical practices in wildlife photography, ensuring that insects are not harmed or disturbed during the process. Through her images, accompanied by educational information, she seeks to correct common misconceptions about insects and highlight their importance to the ecosystem.
Al Majrafi expressed hope that her work will encourage others to explore this small yet significant world with greater awareness and respect, and to contribute to the protection of biodiversity.
Her work has received recognition at local, regional and international levels, including winning second place in the British Luminar Bug Photography Awards. Her photographs have been featured in exhibitions and platforms dedicated to photography, while her publications continue to support both scientific understanding and visual appreciation of insect diversity in Oman.
