Stal Gallery in Muscat Hosts 200-Year Photography Exhibition

Muscat:  An art exhibition marking 200 years since the invention of photography was inaugurated at Stal Art Gallery in Sultan Qaboos City, Muscat.

The exhibition highlights the historical development of photography and reflects artistic connections between Oman and France. It features works by Omani and French artists, showcasing diverse approaches to photographic expression, including the use of artificial intelligence and multi-sensory works designed for both sighted and visually impaired audiences.

Omani visual artist Anwar Sonia presents a collection documenting his artistic journey from 1970 to 2008. His works capture Oman’s environmental, cultural and social diversity across several governorates, including Al Dakhiliyah, Dhofar, South Al Sharqiyah, Musandam, Al Batinah and Muscat. The collection reflects the country’s transition from traditional lifestyles to modern development.

The exhibition also traces the evolution of photographic techniques, from early color photography in the 1980s and film in the 1990s to digital formats in the 2000s.

Photographer Hassan Meer displays works from the early stage of his career in the late 1980s, documenting daily life and landscapes during a period of social change. His artistic journey later led to participation in the Venice Biennale 2022.

Qasim Mohammed Al Farsi, winner of the 2021 Drone Photography Competition, presents aerial images highlighting architectural and natural landscapes in Sur and Al Hamra. His work explores the relationship between Omani heritage and geographical features.

French photographer Amy Colianez contributes works designed to be experienced through visual and sensory elements, incorporating descriptive and narrative components to broaden accessibility.

The exhibition also features emerging Omani photographers employing contemporary techniques such as smartphone photography and artificial intelligence, reflecting ongoing cultural and artistic developments.
