    • UN Warns Heatwaves Could Impact 2026 FIFA World Cup

    By on June 10, 2026

Bonn: The United Nations Climate Change Secretariat has warned that severe heatwaves could affect the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is scheduled to be hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Speaking at the opening of the climate conference in Bonn, the Secretariat said the tournament may take place under exceptional weather conditions as global temperatures continue to rise due to climate change.

The Secretariat noted that extreme heat could affect players, spectators and host cities, both inside stadiums and in surrounding areas, requiring appropriate preventive measures to reduce heat-related risks.

Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said rising temperatures are becoming an increasing challenge for sports and everyday life.

He added that the impacts of climate change extend beyond sporting events to a wide range of sectors, including food security and economic activity.

The Secretariat indicated that some matches could be played under very hot conditions, underscoring the importance of preparedness measures to safeguard public health and ensure the safety of participants and fans.
