US to Impose Up to 200% Tariffs on Imported Generic Medicines Under Trump Plan

Washington: US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on imported generic drugs beginning in mid-2028 as part of efforts to encourage pharmaceutical companies to relocate manufacturing operations to the United States.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said imported generic medicines would remain exempt from tariffs until August 2028. A 100 percent tariff would then be imposed for one year, before increasing to 200 percent thereafter.

He explained that the two-year grace period is intended to provide pharmaceutical manufacturers with sufficient time to shift production to the United States.

Trump added that companies opting not to establish manufacturing facilities in the US would face penalties, although he did not specify the nature of those penalties or the legal basis for implementing the proposed tariffs.

The proposed measures represent a further escalation of pressure on pharmaceutical companies that manufacture generic medicines outside the United States.
