San Francisco: A recent scientific study has warned that excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods may not only increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity, but also negatively affect bone health.
The study, conducted by a joint research team from universities in the United States and China, found that high intake of these foods is linked to lower bone mineral density and a greater risk of hip fractures.
Published in the British Journal of Nutrition, the research analyzed dietary habits and health data from more than 160,000 individuals in the United Kingdom over a period exceeding 12 years.
The findings showed that participants consumed an average of around eight servings of ultra-processed foods per day. Increasing intake by just three additional servings—such as frozen meals, processed sweets and soft drinks—was associated with a 10.5 percent rise in the risk of hip fractures.
The study also recorded a noticeable decline in bone mineral density, particularly in the hip and lower spine regions, among individuals with higher consumption levels.
Researchers noted that these findings highlight the impact of poor dietary patterns and stress the importance of maintaining a balanced diet to support bone health and reduce the risk of related conditions.
Ultra-processed foods are typically high in salt, sugar and unhealthy fats, and previous studies have shown that they make up a significant share of daily calorie intake, especially among children and young adults.
