    • Novak Djokovic Suffers Shock First-Round Exit at US Open

    New York:  Serbia’s Novak Djokovic suffered a shock first-round exit from the US Open tennis championships today, losing to Argentina’s Mariano Navone in a grueling five-set encounter lasting four hours and 36 minutes.

    Navone, who is unseeded, defeated the 39-year-old Djokovic 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, 2-6, 1-6 to secure the biggest victory of his professional career and advance to the second round.

    The defeat ended Djokovic’s bid for a record-extending 25th Grand Slam singles title and marked his first opening-round defeat at a major tournament since the 2006 Australian Open.

    Djokovic struggled physically throughout the match, including episodes of vomiting and difficulties with his serve due to a back complaint. Despite winning the third and fourth sets, he was unable to prevent Navone from completing the comeback.

    In the women’s draw, American Jessica Pegula began her campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse to reach the second round, keeping alive her hopes of moving to the top of the world rankings.

    Italy’s Jasmine Paolini also advanced to the second round, while 27th seed Barbora Krejčíková was eliminated in the opening round.

    Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk and Elina Svitolina also recorded convincing victories, with Kostyuk defeating Australia’s Storm Hunter 6-4, 6-1, while Svitolina beat Argentina’s Solana Sierra 6-1, 6-2.
