US Dollar Holds Firm in Asian Trade
Singapore: The US dollar steadied at the start of Asian trading today, as investors awaited interest rate decisions from the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank of England (BoE), both of which are widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged later today.
The US dollar index, which measures the greenback’s performance against a basket of six major currencies, rose 0.2 percent to 96.671, after trading near a two-week high earlier in the session.
The euro remained stable at $1.1800 ahead of the ECB’s policy announcement, where markets anticipate rates will be left unchanged. The British pound was also flat at $1.3650 ahead of the Bank of England’s decision, with expectations similarly pointing to no change in policy.
Against the Chinese yuan traded offshore in Hong Kong, the dollar eased 0.1 percent to 6.9386 yuan.
The Australian dollar edged up 0.1 percent to $0.70045, while the New Zealand dollar strengthened 0.1 percent to $0.60045.
