European Stock Markets Open Lower Amid Rising Oil Prices
Brussels: European stock markets opened lower today as renewed tensions in West Asia and higher oil prices weighed on investor sentiment.
The pan-European STOXX 600 index fell by 0.1 percent to 624.32 points in early trading.
Germany’s DAX index declined by 0.67 percent, while France’s CAC 40 index dropped 0.41 percent. Italy’s FTSE MIB index fell 0.49 percent.
In contrast, Britain’s FTSE 100 index edged up 0.03 percent, supported by gains in energy stocks following the rise in oil prices.
Market sentiment was influenced by ongoing geopolitical developments in the region, which reduced expectations of a near-term resolution to the crisis.
However, comments by US President Donald Trump indicating that talks with Iran were continuing helped limit broader market losses.
Among sectoral movements, airline stocks declined as higher fuel costs weighed on the sector. Shares of Lufthansa and Air France each fell by 1 percent.
Automobile stocks recorded the largest sectoral decline, dropping by 1.2 percent during early trading.
