FAO Warns of Growing Threat of Antimicrobial Resistance

Geneva: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has warned that antimicrobial resistance poses a significant long-term threat to food security, livestock production, economic well-being and human health.

According to a report cited by UN News, the organization stressed that antimicrobials play an essential role in protecting animal health. However, their overuse and misuse can accelerate the development of antimicrobial resistance.

FAO cautioned that, without decisive action, global antimicrobial use in livestock is projected to increase by approximately 30 percent by 2040.

The organization also highlighted the use of antimicrobial growth promoters in some livestock production systems, noting that they are employed to improve animal growth and feed efficiency, but may contribute to the broader challenge of antimicrobial resistance.

FAO called for stronger efforts to promote the responsible use of antimicrobials and safeguard the sustainability of food production systems worldwide.
