Dollar Index Holds Firm Following US Labor Market Data
Singapore: The US dollar rose for a second consecutive day against major currencies during Asian trading today, supported by strong US labor market data and increased demand for safe-haven assets amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
The euro declined by 0.2 percent to $1.1757, while the Japanese yen weakened by 0.3 percent to 157.155 per dollar.
Sterling also fell by 0.3 percent to $1.3590, while the Australian dollar declined by 0.2 percent and the New Zealand dollar lost 0.3 percent.
Meanwhile, the Chinese yuan gained 0.1 percent against the US dollar, marking its eighth consecutive daily increase, as markets awaited a planned US presidential visit to China to discuss economic and geopolitical issues, including energy and artificial intelligence (AI).
Chinese producer prices in April 2026 recorded their highest level in 45 months, supported by rising global energy costs, while Chinese exports accelerated amid continued demand for AI-related technologies.
The dollar index, which measures the US currency against a basket of six major currencies, remained stable at 98.103.
The gains followed the release of US labor market data showing the addition of 115,000 jobs in April 2026, reinforcing market expectations that US interest rates will likely remain unchanged in the near term.
