Senegal Plans Malaria Vaccine Rollout in High-Risk Areas from 2027

Dakar:  Senegal’s health authorities announced plans to incorporate the malaria vaccine into the national immunisation programme starting in 2027, with initial implementation in high-risk areas.

The rollout will begin in five health districts during the first phase, focusing on southeastern regions that record the highest infection rates.

Officials said the country is currently in a preparatory stage, noting that nationwide coverage will be implemented gradually.

The move follows recommendations by the World Health Organization (WHO), which endorsed the RTS,S/AS01 and R21/Matrix-M vaccines for children in areas with moderate to high malaria transmission.

According to official data, Senegal records more than 200,000 malaria cases annually, with fatalities largely affecting children under five and pregnant women.

In 2024, the country reported 429,369 cases, including 10,433 severe cases and 314 deaths. Authorities aim to reduce infection rates and protect vulnerable groups through the planned rollout.
