Oman Hosts 17th ESCWA Statistical Committee Session
Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman will host the 17th session of the Statistical Committee of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) next Tuesday.
The three-day session will be held in Al Jabal Al Akhdar and will review progress in implementing the recommendations of the 16th session, follow up on ESCWA’s statistical work programme and provide a regional platform for dialogue on priorities for developing statistical work in the Arab region.
The session will also seek to strengthen coordination and the exchange of expertise and experiences among member states.
Dr. Khalifa bin Abdullah Al Barwani, CEO of the National Centre for Statistics and Information, said that the session will discuss a number of topics related to developing and modernising national statistical systems, strengthening their governance and enhancing their resilience and responsiveness during crises.
He added that discussions will cover the use of modern technologies and artificial intelligence, as well as non-traditional data sources in producing official statistics.
In a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA), Dr. Al Barwani said the session is expected to result in a set of recommendations supporting the development of national statistical systems, promoting innovative data sources and modern technologies, and enhancing the production of high-quality data to support evidence-based policies and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
The ESCWA Statistical Committee meets every two years and serves as a regional framework for monitoring progress in statistical work, identifying future priorities, and promoting cooperation and coordination among member states.
The session will be attended by heads of national statistical agencies and offices in Arab countries or their representatives, along with representatives of relevant United Nations bodies, Arab and regional partner organisations, experts and specialists in statistics.
