Russia Confirms 31 Dead in Military Aircraft Crash in Crimea

Moscow: A senior commander in the Russian Air Force was among 31 people killed in the crash of a military transport aircraft in the Russian-controlled Crimean Peninsula last week, according to official statements.

Andrey Chibis, Governor of the Murmansk region, identified the officer as Alexander Otroshchenko, Commander of the Air Force and Air Defense of the 45th Army of the Northern Fleet.

The Antonov An-26 aircraft crashed into a rocky cliff in Crimea on 31 March 2026. Russia’s Ministry of Defense indicated that a technical malfunction is the preliminary cause of the incident.

The An-26, which entered service in the late 1960s, has been involved in several fatal accidents over recent years.
