7.7 Earthquake Hits Japan, Six Injured and Tsunami Triggered

Tokyo: A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Japan today, leaving six people injured and triggering a minor tsunami, according to Japanese authorities.

The earthquake, centred in the Pacific Ocean, generated waves measuring about 80 centimetres, while strong tremors were felt in the capital, Tokyo, hundreds of kilometres from the epicentre.

Japan’s disaster management agency reported that two of the injured are in serious condition, confirming that no deaths, fires or damage to critical facilities have been recorded.

Authorities continue to assess the situation and monitor any potential aftershocks.

Japan is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire and is among the most seismically active countries in the world, experiencing around 1,500 earthquakes annually.

In 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami that resulted in about 18,500 deaths or missing persons and caused a nuclear accident at the Fukushima power plant.
