Madrid: French star Kylian Mbappé marked his 27th birthday by equaling a historic Real Madrid record previously held by club legend Cristiano Ronaldo, scoring his 59th goal of the calendar year as Los Blancos secured a 2–0 victory over Sevilla.
Real Madrid had to work hard for the win, opening the scoring seven minutes before halftime. Jude Bellingham rose above the defense to meet a precise free kick from Rodrygo, directing a powerful glancing header into the top corner.
Sevilla showed intent on the counterattack after the break, but their challenge was significantly hampered in the 58th minute when defender Marcao received a second yellow card following a reckless challenge on Bellingham.
Despite the numerical advantage, Mbappé endured a frustrating evening in front of goal, seeing a close-range effort saved, a curling shot drift wide, and a header strike the crossbar. At the other end, Sevilla forward Isaac Romero twice tested Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who produced sharp saves to preserve his side’s lead.
The decisive moment came in the 86th minute when Rodrygo was brought down inside the penalty area by Juanlu Sánchez. Mbappé stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick, sending goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos the wrong way to match Ronaldo’s iconic 2013 record of 59 goals in a single calendar year for Real Madrid.
Moments later, Mbappé appeared to have an opportunity to surpass the record when a second penalty was initially awarded, but the decision was overturned following a VAR review.
The victory keeps pressure on league leaders Barcelona, as Xabi Alonso’s side claimed three important points in their pursuit of the title.
