UN Says Over 318 Million Face Acute Food Insecurity Worldwide

Rome: Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), warned of a worsening global hunger situation in 2026, stating that more than 318 million people are currently facing acute levels of food insecurity worldwide.

According to the UN News Centre, McCain said that the World Food Programme cannot end hunger alone, emphasizing that current global challenges demand swift, strategic, and decisive action. She called on world leaders to take urgent steps to prevent human-made famines, increase humanitarian funding, and address ongoing conflicts that continue to drive hunger in many regions.

“Barely two weeks into the new year, the world is already confronting the risk of a dangerous and deepening global hunger crisis,” McCain said.

She reaffirmed the WFP’s commitment to its mission, stating that the organization remains determined to mobilize the support and resources required to reach those whose survival depends on humanitarian assistance.
