Barcelona Extend La Liga Lead with Convincing Victory at Elche
Barcelona: Substitute Marcus Rashford continued his impressive scoring run to help Barcelona secure a convincing 3–1 away victory over Elche, extending their lead at the top of the Spanish La Liga standings to four points.
The reigning champions, now unbeaten in 16 matches across all competitions, asserted their authority early in the contest. Teenage star Lamine Yamal opened the scoring in the sixth minute after skillfully rounding goalkeeper Iñaki Peña, following a perfectly weighted through ball from Dani Olmo.
Elche, who have not defeated Barcelona since 1974, briefly restored parity in the 29th minute when Álvaro Rodríguez exploited Barcelona’s high defensive line to finish calmly. However, Hansi Flick’s side swiftly regained control, with Ferran Torres restoring the lead just before halftime by emphatically converting Frenkie de Jong’s cut-back into the roof of the net.
The introduction of Marcus Rashford at the start of the second half proved decisive. The England international added Barcelona’s third goal with a close-range finish from Yamal’s low cross, registering his 10th goal of the season and scoring for the second consecutive match following his midweek strike in the UEFA Champions League.
Barcelona dominated proceedings throughout, creating numerous chances. Olmo struck the post early on, while Torres hit the woodwork twice in quick succession and later saw a goalbound effort cleared off the line by defender Víctor Chust.
The victory consolidates Barcelona’s position at the top of the table and places pressure on second-placed Real Madrid, who can narrow the gap to one point with a win over Rayo Vallecano in their game in hand later today.
