Air Travel Halted as Storm Sweeps Across North Island

Wellington: Heavy rain and strong winds disrupted flights, trains and ferries across large parts of New Zealand’s North Island today, forcing road closures and cutting power to tens of thousands of properties.

Air New Zealand suspended operations at Wellington Airport, Napier Airport and Palmerston North Airport, according to domestic media reports.

More than 30,000 properties were left without electricity, including around 10,000 customers in Wellington. Authorities urged motorists to avoid unnecessary travel, while several schools were closed as emergency crews responded to widespread damage.

The storm is forecast to bring further heavy rain as it moves towards the east coast of the South Island on Tuesday, the national weather bureau said, with officials warning of continued disruption.
