Washington, D.C: A powerful winter system sweeping across the US East Coast has disrupted air travel and forced widespread school closures, as the National Weather Service issued urgent warnings of heavy snowfall and strong winds.
Zahran Mamdani, Mayor of New York City, told residents during an emergency press conference that snowfall accumulations are expected to range between 33 and 43 centimeters, with the possibility of reaching 50 centimeters or more. He urged residents to remain indoors as conditions intensify.
Federal authorities cautioned that parts of the northeastern United States could receive up to two feet of snow, with wind gusts of up to 70 miles per hour. Such conditions significantly increase the risk of falling trees, hazardous travel and widespread power outages.
In Massachusetts, Governor Maura Healey declared a state of emergency and ordered non-essential state employees to stay home as the storm advances.
The severe weather comes weeks after a violent winter storm struck the region in late January, resulting in more than 100 fatalities.
