AFC Says Iran Federation Intends to Participate in 2026 World Cup

Kuala Lumpur, 16 Mar 2026 (ONA) — The Asian Football Confederation announced that it has not received any formal notification regarding a potential withdrawal by Iran from the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite circulating speculation.

Iran has already qualified for the expanded 48-team tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, starting on 11 June 2026.

The Iranian team is scheduled to play two group-stage matches in Los Angeles and one match in Seattle.

Speaking to reporters in Kuala Lumpur, Windsor John said the matter ultimately lies with the Iranian Football Federation.

“To this day, the Iranian Federation has communicated to us that they will participate in the World Cup,” he confirmed.

The quadrennial global tournament will run from 11 June to 19 July 2026.
