Bangkok: The national hockey team of the Sultanate of Oman continued its strong run in the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 Asian Games, securing a 5-1 victory over Kazakhstan in the final match of the group stage.
With this result, Oman topped Group (1) with a full tally of 12 points, maintaining an unbeaten record throughout the group stage.
The match saw Oman assert control from the outset, demonstrating tactical organization, defensive discipline and attacking efficiency to extend its winning streak in the tournament.
Oman will face Uzbekistan, runners-up of Group (2), in the semi-final scheduled for Thursday. The other semi-final will see Sri Lanka, winners of Group (2), take on Indonesia, runners-up of Group (1).
The winners of the two matches will advance to the final, set to take place on Friday, 10 April, while the losing teams will compete for third place.
Oman had already secured qualification for the 2026 Asian Games finals, to be held in Nagoya, Japan, from 19 September to 4 October, following its results in the qualifiers.
The qualifiers feature nine Asian teams divided into two groups. Group (1) includes Oman, Hong Kong, Thailand, Kazakhstan and Indonesia, while Group (2) comprises Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan.
The competition is being held in a single round-robin format, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals.
Six teams from the qualifiers will complete the lineup for the continental finals, joining India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea and China.
