Djibouti: Voters in the Republic of Djibouti cast their ballots today to elect a new president for a five-year term.

Incumbent President Ismail Omar Guelleh, representing the Union for the Presidential Majority, is contesting the election against Mohamed Farah Samatar, head of the Centre of United Democrats.

Guelleh’s programme focuses on strengthening national security, sovereignty and economic transformation through digitalisation and renewable energy, while Samatar’s platform centres on infrastructure development, basic services and youth employment.

According to Djibouti’s Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Interior, 67 international observers from organisations including the African Union, IGAD, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the League of Arab States are monitoring the electoral process.

The number of registered voters is estimated at 256,467 across various electoral districts.
