Port Moresby: Cyclone Maila caused widespread flooding and landslides in Papua New Guinea, leaving at least 11 people dead, with Bougainville among the hardest-hit areas, according to official sources and local media.
The cyclone struck coastal areas with strong winds, resulting in severe damage to villages and infrastructure. Local reports indicated that eight people died in a landslide that buried a house overnight.
Initial estimates indicate that more than 10,000 people have been affected, while about 20,000 require urgent humanitarian assistance, particularly in Bougainville.
The disaster led to the displacement of residents and damage to roads and bridges, disrupting the delivery of food supplies. Schools are expected to remain closed during the week.
Prime Minister James Marape stated that access to remote areas remains challenging as assessments of the damage continue. He affirmed that efforts are underway to deliver relief assistance, including food, water and temporary shelters.
The impact of the cyclone extended to parts of the Solomon Islands, where damage was also reported. Australia announced financial support to assist affected communities in both countries.
Cyclone Maila moved across the Solomon Sea with winds reaching around 300 kilometres per hour and was briefly classified as a Category 5 storm before weakening.
