Oman Calls for Stronger Global Action on Education at UNESCO Meeting

Paris: The Sultanate of Oman affirmed the importance of strengthening multilateral action and supporting the role of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in protecting education and safeguarding cultural heritage during the 224th session of the UNESCO Executive Board, held from 8 to 23 April.

Ambassador Amna Salim Al Balushi, Permanent Delegate of the Sultanate of Oman to UNESCO, said in her address at the opening of the plenary sessions that the Arab region is facing growing challenges due to conflicts and attacks targeting infrastructure, educational institutions and cultural assets, particularly in Palestine and Lebanon.

She highlighted the resulting disruptions to education systems and stressed the need for coordinated international efforts to ensure continuity of education during crises.

Al Balushi reiterated Oman’s position calling for peaceful solutions, de-escalation and the promotion of dialogue and diplomacy to enhance security and stability and uphold international law.

She added that education remains a national priority for the Sultanate of Oman and a key pillar of Oman Vision 2040, noting the country’s contribution to international initiatives related to the future of education and its participation in UNESCO frameworks.

The Ambassador also underlined UNESCO’s role in protecting cultural heritage and preserving cultural diversity, particularly in conflict areas, and welcomed initiatives aimed at enhancing the organisation’s efficiency and governance.

She reaffirmed Oman’s commitment to supporting UNESCO’s mission in promoting peace, advancing knowledge and preserving culture.
