Russian Scientists Develop Nanotech to Repair Liver and Reduce Fibrosis

Moscow: A research team from Sechenov University in Russia, in cooperation with several scientific institutions, has developed a biotechnology aimed at protecting the liver and supporting its natural regeneration using nanoparticles and microRNA molecules.

The technology relies on biocompatible and degradable nanocarriers made from polylactic acid, designed to regulate microRNA-200a and deliver it directly to liver cells. This approach helps protect the molecules from degradation and allows their gradual release within damaged tissue.

Peter Timashev, Director of a scientific laboratory at Sechenov University, said that the technology targets genes associated with inflammation and oxidative stress.

He added that experimental results demonstrated a reduction in liver fibrosis and an improvement in tissue regeneration in both acute and chronic conditions.

The project involved contributions from researchers at Nizhny Novgorod Medical Research University, ITMO University in St Petersburg, and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, with the aim of supporting future treatments for liver fibrosis and failure.
