Manila: Mayon Volcano, the most active volcano in the Philippines, erupted today, dispersing ash over surrounding villages, according to local authorities.
Around 52 villages in Albay province, located about 330 kilometres southeast of Manila, have been affected since Saturday. Lava flows have also been observed descending the slopes of the volcano, the Philippine News Agency reported.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned of potential hazards, including rockfalls, landslides, lava flows, volcanic fountains and moderate-intensity explosions.
Mayon Volcano’s most severe recorded eruption occurred in 1814, resulting in the deaths of more than 1,200 people and burying an entire town. Another eruption in 1993 claimed 79 lives.
