Europe Leaders Meet in Yerevan to Discuss Security and Energy

Yerevan: The eighth summit of the European Political Community began today in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, with the participation of nearly 50 heads of state and government.

The summit is held under the theme “Building the Future: Unity and Stability in Europe”.

Leaders are discussing energy security, economic issues and strengthening European cooperation amid ongoing political and security challenges.

Discussions also address reducing reliance on external partners in areas such as security, energy and defence, in a bid to enhance Europe’s strategic autonomy.

The European Political Community is an informal forum that brings together leaders from most European countries, whether members of the European Union or not, with the exception of Russia and Belarus.

The summit takes place amid tensions in transatlantic relations, alongside differing views on military cooperation within NATO.

Canada is participating in the summit for the first time as a non-European country, represented by Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The summit is co-chaired by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and European Council President António Costa.
