France Confirms Hantavirus Infection Among Repatriated Cruise Passengers
Paris: France has recorded its first confirmed case of hantavirus involving a woman who was among passengers aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius.
French Minister of Health Stéphanie Rist announced today that several passengers evacuated from the vessel tested positive for the virus, noting that 22 contacts have been identified within France.
The minister stated that five French nationals had been repatriated to Paris and placed under quarantine measures. She added that the condition of one female passenger deteriorated overnight before medical tests confirmed her infection with the virus.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is scheduled to hold a meeting to review developments related to the case.
In the United States, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that one American citizen among 17 people evacuated from the cruise ship tested positive for the Andes strain of hantavirus and is experiencing mild symptoms.
Health authorities explained that hantaviruses are generally transmitted through rodents, while human-to-human transmission remains rare.
Authorities also indicated that the overall risk of wider transmission remains low.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Andes strain identified in the outbreak linked to the ship can cause severe pulmonary complications and may lead to death in some cases.
