Millions Return to Sudan Despite Ongoing Humanitarian Challenges
Geneva: The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced that around 4.1 million people have returned to their areas of origin across Sudan amid the ongoing displacement crisis in the country.
Mohammed Refaat, Chief of the IOM mission in Sudan, described the increase in returns from both inside and outside Sudan as a positive indicator reflecting the population’s desire for stability despite continuing humanitarian challenges.
He said that more than 80 percent of returnees came back from internal displacement locations to nine major states, mainly Khartoum, Al Jazirah and Sennar.
The returns contributed to reducing the number of internally displaced people by 23 percent compared to the peak of the crisis in January 2026, when nearly 12 million people had been displaced.
Refaat noted that returnees continue to face difficult living conditions due to shortages in essential services and extensive damage to infrastructure.
He explained that around 70 percent of homes in Khartoum have been partially or completely destroyed, while electricity, water, health and education services remain severely affected.
