Brussels:  European countries are expected to source 80 percent of their liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from the United States by 2028, according to a report issued today by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, which warned of the risks associated with heavy dependence on a single energy supplier.

The report stated that the United States is on track to become Europe’s largest supplier of total gas, including both LNG and pipeline gas, during 2026.

The institute indicated that the United States is expected to meet nearly two-thirds of Europe’s LNG demand this year, compared to about 58 percent of European Union imports last year.

The increase in US gas imports, which more than tripled between 2021 and 2025, comes within the framework of the European Union’s strategy to gradually phase out Russian gas supplies.

The European Union has already banned short-term Russian gas contracts and plans to implement a full ban on Russian LNG imports by January 2027 and on pipeline gas by September 2027.

Despite these measures, EU imports of Russian LNG increased by 16 percent during the first quarter of 2026 compared to the corresponding period in 2025.

The institute called on European countries to expand investments in renewable energy and heat pump technologies to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and limit exposure to price fluctuations linked to geopolitical tensions.
