Ebola Outbreak Cases Continue to Increase, WHO Says
Geneva: The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed deep concern over the speed and scale of the Ebola outbreak as the number of infections continues to rise.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said there are at least 500 suspected cases and 130 suspected deaths since the outbreak began.
He added that these figures are in addition to one confirmed death and one confirmed case in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, as well as 30 confirmed cases in Ituri province in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Tedros noted that the figures are expected to change as field operations expand, including enhanced surveillance, contact tracing and laboratory testing.
He made the remarks during the World Health Assembly currently being held in Geneva.
The WHO chief also announced that an emergency committee meeting is scheduled later today to discuss the Ebola outbreak and assess developments related to its spread.
The committee comprises international experts who provide advice to the WHO Director-General.
WHO expressed concern over the potential for wider transmission, particularly following confirmed cases in urban areas including Kampala, Goma and Ituri.
