US Senate Votes on Limiting Military Action Against Iran
Washington: The US Senate approved a symbolic resolution aimed at restricting President Donald Trump’s authority to continue military action against Iran amid growing concerns over the escalating costs of the conflict and its uncertain trajectory.
The procedural vote passed by 50 votes to 47, with four Republican senators joining all but one Democrat in supporting the measure, while three Republicans abstained.
The resolution still requires a final vote and faces additional legislative hurdles before taking effect. It must also secure approval from the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and obtain a two-thirds majority in both chambers to override an anticipated presidential veto.
The vote reflects increasing concern within the Republican Party as the conflict enters its third month, placing pressure on US weapons stockpiles, raising questions about military readiness and pushing official cost estimates above USD 30 billion.
The resolution calls on the administration to either halt military operations against Iran or seek congressional authorization to continue them, citing the 1973 War Powers Act.
The legislation was introduced following the Vietnam War to limit presidential authority in conducting prolonged military campaigns without approval from Congress.
