Malta’s Labour Party Wins Fourth Consecutive Election
Valletta: Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela announced today that the Labour Party has secured a fourth consecutive term in office following its victory in the country’s general elections.
Speaking to journalists, Abela said the result represented a victory for the Maltese people and reflected support for the programme presented by his party. He added that the election outcome had given the Labour Party a strong mandate.
The Labour Party won a parliamentary majority, although preliminary indications suggest it is smaller than the majority achieved in the 2022 elections, when the party secured 55 percent of the vote.
Charles Bonello, Secretary General of the opposition Nationalist Party, conceded defeat in remarks to state broadcaster TVM, while noting that his party had succeeded in reducing the Labour Party’s margin of victory.
The elections were held on Saturday, with voter turnout reaching 87.4 percent, slightly higher than the turnout recorded in the 2022 general elections.
Abela is scheduled to be sworn in tomorrow, Monday. He has served as leader of the Labour Party since 2020, succeeding former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.
