7.8-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southern Philippines, Tsunami Warnings Issued

Tsunami Alerts Issued After 7.8-Magnitude Earthquake Off Philippines Coast

Manila:  An earthquake measuring 7.8 magnitude struck off the southern coast of the Philippines today, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The USGS said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometres off the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines.

Following the quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning indicating that tsunami waves could affect coastal areas of the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea within the next three hours.

The Centre stated that wave heights could reach between one and three metres above tide level along parts of the Philippine coastline, while waves ranging from 0.3 to one metre could affect coastal areas in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning covering parts of the Pacific coast, extending from Okinawa in southern Japan to areas east of Tokyo.

No immediate reports of casualties or damage were available.

The Philippines is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active region where several tectonic plates meet, making the country prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
