Beijing: Heavy rainfall over the past two days has triggered flooding in parts of Guizhou Province in southwestern China, prompting the evacuation of nearly 10,000 residents, according to Chinese state media.
Xinhua News Agency reported that the worst-affected areas include Qianxi City, Zunyi City and Changshun County.
In Qianxi City, continuous rainfall impacted all 30 towns, with five areas recording exceptionally heavy precipitation.
Local authorities activated emergency response measures around the clock. Rescue teams evacuated 1,377 residents from 491 households and rescued more than 50 people who had become stranded by floodwaters.
In Changshun County, more than 3,000 residents from nearly 1,000 households were relocated after a power outage disrupted reservoir operations, causing water levels to overflow.
China’s Ministry of Water Resources and the China Meteorological Administration jointly issued a red alert, the highest level of warning, citing a high risk of flash floods in parts of southeastern Guizhou.
In response, authorities in the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture intensified monitoring of 27 rivers and deployed thousands of officials and flood-control personnel.
Authorities said that 4,582 residents from 1,322 households in Qiandongnan were evacuated as a precautionary measure, while efforts were continuing to relocate an additional 21,754 people from 7,213 households.
