New Zealand Evacuates Hundreds as 11-Metre Waves Hit Wellington Coast

Wellington: New Zealand authorities evacuated hundreds of residents from coastal areas in Wellington today after waves reaching up to 11 metres battered parts of the coastline.

Wellington Mayor Andrew Little declared a state of emergency ahead of the arrival of the large waves affecting the coastal communities of Owhiro Bay, Island Bay, Houghton Bay and Breaker Bay.

He urged residents to stay away from the south coast and comply with evacuation instructions, warning that emergency services would face difficulties assisting individuals who remained in affected areas.

The evacuation order came into effect today, with police deployed to help ensure residents moved to safer locations on higher ground.

The severe weather also disrupted air travel, with several flights cancelled at Wellington Airport as wind speeds reached 128 kilometres per hour.

Wellington City Council noted that a similar storm in 2021 caused damage to a number of homes in Breaker Bay when waves reached approximately 6.5 metres.

Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions and coastal impacts as emergency response measures remain in place.
