UN: Drone Strikes Kill At Least 1,000 Civilians in Sudan in 2026

UN Reports Rising Civilian Deaths from Drone Strikes in Sudan

Khartoum: The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said today that at least 1,000 civilians were killed in drone strikes in Sudan during the first five months of 2026, amid a growing escalation in the use of unmanned aerial attacks in the country’s conflict.

Addressing the Human Rights Council in Geneva, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said his office had documented a significant increase in drone attacks, noting that the conflict in Sudan has continued to expand and intensify.

Türk warned that the growing use of drones has contributed to increased civilian casualties and heightened humanitarian concerns.

According to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), the conflict in Sudan has claimed at least 59,000 lives over the past three years. The US-based monitoring organization noted that the actual death toll is likely higher due to challenges in documenting fatalities in conflict-affected areas.
