Financial Services Authority Reports Growth in Insurance Sector Investments

Muscat: Total investments by insurance companies operating in the Sultanate of Oman reached approximately RO 876.3 million by the end of the first quarter of 2026, representing a 10.3 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025, according to unaudited statistical data issued by the Financial Services Authority (FSA).

The growth reflects the expanding role of the insurance sector in supporting the national economy through the investment of assets and accumulated funds across a range of financial instruments, contributing to economic activity and growth.

Insurance companies manage their investment portfolios in accordance with the Investment of Insurance and Takaful Assets Regulation issued under Decision No. 76/2020, which provides the regulatory framework governing the investment of policyholders’ funds and shareholders’ equity while promoting financial sustainability and reducing investment risks.

The regulation requires insurance companies to invest at least 70 percent of their total assets within the Sultanate of Oman and sets investment limits across various asset classes, including bank deposits, equities, bonds and real estate.

According to the data, national insurance companies accounted for approximately RO 588.8 million of the sector’s total investments, while foreign insurance companies held investments amounting to around RO 287.5 million.

National insurance companies allocated around 80 percent of their investments within Oman, while foreign companies invested approximately 85 percent of their portfolios in the local market, reflecting continued confidence in the Omani investment environment.

Cash and bank deposits represented the largest investment category for national insurance companies, totaling approximately RO 263.9 million, or 45 percent of their total investments. Commercial bonds amounted to around RO 87.2 million, followed by government bonds at RO 79.4 million and listed shares at approximately RO 73.6 million.

The data also showed strong growth across several investment categories compared to the first quarter of 2025. Investments in listed shares increased by 90.6 percent, investment funds by 78.4 percent, commercial bonds by 37.4 percent, and unlisted shares by 32 percent, reflecting greater diversification in investment portfolios.

At the company level, the four largest insurance companies accounted for 44 percent of the sector’s total investments. Gulf Insurance Group ranked first with investments of approximately RO 106.8 million, followed by Dhofar Insurance with RO 106.4 million, Liva Insurance with RO 97.7 million, and Oman Qatar Insurance with RO 75 million.

The indicators underscore the insurance sector’s growing contribution to the national economy, not only through insurance services but also as an institutional investor supporting financial market stability, capital formation and sustainable economic development.
