Google Expands Gemini with Play Store Integration on Android

Washington:  Google has begun rolling out a new integration between its Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) assistant and the Google Play Store on Android, enabling users to search for apps, discover new services and purchase digital content without leaving the conversation.

The feature, first unveiled during Google I/O 2026, is being introduced gradually to eligible Android users.

With the update, users can ask Gemini to recommend apps based on specific needs, such as navigation for international travel or meal planning. Gemini can then open the selected app’s page directly in the Google Play Store, making the download process more streamlined.

The integration also enables users to purchase Google Play gift cards and buy digital content within installed applications through Gemini, reducing the need to navigate multiple menus.

The feature is being rolled out to Android users aged 18 and above who have a personal Google Account and have enabled the Gemini Apps Activity setting. It is not currently available for Google Workspace accounts.

Google said the integration is designed to improve app discovery by allowing Gemini to understand users’ requests based on intent rather than relying solely on keyword searches across the millions of applications available on Google Play.

The Play Store integration forms part of Google’s broader efforts to expand Gemini’s capabilities as a digital assistant, following recent integrations with Chrome, Google Wallet, Messages and Phone.

The company aims to enable users to complete a wider range of everyday tasks through a single conversation with Gemini, minimizing the need to switch between multiple applications.
