Broad Money Supply in Oman Increases 12.7% by End of May 2026

Muscat: Broad money supply (M2) in the Sultanate of Oman increased by 12.7 percent year-on-year to reach RO 28.6 billion by the end of May 2026, according to the latest report issued by the Central Bank of Oman (CBO).

The growth was driven by a 26.9 percent increase in narrow money and a 7.1 percent rise in quasi-money, which comprises savings and time deposits in Omani rials, certificates of deposit issued by banks, margin accounts and foreign currency deposits held within the banking sector.

The report indicated that currency in circulation outside the banking system increased by 12.1 percent, while demand deposits recorded a strong annual growth of 29.8 percent.

With regard to interest rates at conventional commercial banks, the weighted average interest rate on Omani rial deposits declined from 2.708 percent in May 2025 to 2.366 percent in May 2026.

The weighted average lending rate on Omani rial loans also eased from 5.551 percent to 5.327 percent over the same period.

Meanwhile, the average overnight interbank lending rate fell to 3.375 percent in May 2026, compared to 4.394 percent a year earlier.

The decline reflected a reduction in the weighted average interest rate on repurchase operations to 4.250 percent, down from 5.000 percent in May 2025, in line with the monetary policy direction of the US Federal Reserve.
